6 Important Guidelines Before Attempting IIT JEE Exams


Cracking IIT JEE is one of the main goals of aspirants who are aiming to pursue a career in the field of Engineering and Technical Studies. This entrance exam is conducted on a national level and it is a standardized test for granting admission to some of the premier Technology and Engineering institutes in India. The JEE system is divided into two exams – JEE Mains and JEE Advanced that are conducted in a different time frame. Students can appear for one or both the exams.

JEE exam is conducted annually and every year there are lakhs of students who apply for the same. The competition is intense and students need to have a well-organized preparation wherein they need to be academically strong. They need to have a clear understanding of the concepts covered in the JEE syllabus and develop adept problem-solving skills. In essence, preparation is key to performing well and clearing the exams.

Having said that, if you are one of the aspirants and are planning to write the exam then we have prepared a list of important guidelines. These are basically the do’s and don’ts that you should keep in mind before taking up the final exam. 

Check The Eligibility Criteria

If you are planning to apply or register for IIT JEE then you should first go through the eligibility criteria set by the exam authority. You should go through the requirements and check whether you meet them or not. If you are eligible then your application will be successful.

Go Through The Admit Card Properly

Once you have successfully applied for the exam the next stage is to procure your hall ticket or the admit card. These are usually released on the official website (www.jeemain.nic) and they can be downloaded directly. One important thing that you should do is check the admit card and verify the details. Make sure they are correct. If there are any mistakes you should contact the authorities and get them fixed immediately. 

Get Familiar With The Exam 

In your JEE preparation journey, you should make it a point to learn everything about the exam. Spend some time to understand the mode of the exam, question paper pattern, the medium of the exam, marking scheme, etc. Go through the syllabus at least once.

Visit The Exam Centre

You should go to examine your JEE exam centre one day before the exam. It will help you get an idea about the location and get familiar with it. You will also be able to determine the amount of time it takes to reach the centre, the distance and transportation.

Know Which Items Are Allowed In The Exam Hall 

JEE exams are conducted in a strict environment. There is even a thorough checking done by the security guards at the entry gates. You should know what items you can carry to the exam hall. Here is a list of things that can be taken.

  • Any original government id proof.
  • Admit card in the form of a coloured print-out on an A-4 size sheet.
  • A passport-sized photograph.
  • PwD category certificates issued by the concerned authority.

Things That Are Banned

You should also know things that are banned.

  • Things like bags, wallets, eatables (apart from diabetic patients) and even electronic devices like watches, calculators, phones cannot be taken to the exam centre.
  • Paper, pen, pencil or geometry box is banned.
  • Any textual material including books, notes, etc.
  • Water bottles.

Do remember to follow a proper dress code as well. Do not put on layers of clothes. Wear something comfortable and casual. Avoid wearing jewellery, caps, scarves, clothes with too many pockets. You can choose flip-flops over shoes.
