Many of us ponder over which are the top 10 architectural colleges in the country. Well before you scroll down to go through the colleges, there is something that we would like to mention. The following list has been compiled after a long survey comprising of talking to students and faculty of the various colleges, analyzing the market value of a college, understanding why some colleges are sought after and why the others are not. The following results are a direct result of this survey.

 

RANK 1 – School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi

The School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi commonly referred to as SPA is widely considered as the best architectural college in the country. Some of the many reasons behind are as following-

  1. Quality of Student Intake Most of the students who take admission into the college do so due to their under 1000 rank in the JEE Paper 2 exam.
  2. Faculty- The faculty at SPA is experienced and well renowned. This is partly due to the fact that the college is situated in the National Capital and attracts the best talent in respect to the faculty.
  3. Location- The location of the college is an added advantage due to the inherent qualities of Delhi as an architectural hub as well as the National Capital.
  4. Examination to be given for Admission–  JEE Mains (Paper 2)
  5. Infrastructure- The infrastructure of the college is old. This includes the campus itself and the hostels located away from the college. The library situated in the campus is famous for the architectural wealth that it holds in the form of old books and journals.

RANK 2- Center for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT University),Ahmadabad

The Center for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT University) located in Ahmadabad, Gujarat is another great college to go to. Let us discuss the college in some detail.

  1. Quality of Student Intake Most of the students who allowed to take admission into the college are from Gujarat. This percentage is around 90% of the total student intake. This is more of a disadvantage than an advantage as this does not allow a lot of talent coming into the college. Leaving this aspect aside, the overall quality of student intake is good.
  2. Faculty- The faculty at CEPT is experienced and dynamic. A lot of visiting faculty is also called in from other colleges and institutions across the world.
  3. Location- The college is located in the university area in Ahmadabad and is easily accessible.
  4. Examination to be given for Admission– National Aptitude Test for Architecture(NATA)
  5. Infrastructure- The infrastructure of the college is great and is well designed. There are two hostel blocks present for the students.

RANK 3- Sir J.J. College of Architecture, Mumbai

Sir J.J. College of Architecture located in Mumbai is another great college to study in. Some of the key aspects of the college are discussed below.

  1. Quality of Student Intake Most of the students who allowed to take admission into the college are from within the state. As in the case of CEPT, this is more of a disadvantage than an advantage.
  2. Faculty- The faculty at Sir JJ is experienced and well versed with the profession that architecture is. The location of the college also helps with bringing the right talent in respect to the faculty of the college.
  3. Location- The college is located on the Dr. Dadabhoy Naoroji Road, in Mumbai. The location of the college is in pretty much the nerve centre of the city(Fort Industrial Area). Also, as mentioned above, Mumbai as a metropolitan and the commercial hub of the country attracts good talent both in respect to the students as well as faculty.

  5. Infrastructure- The college is one of the oldest in the country being established in the year 1910. By the virtue of that aspect, the campus comprises 3 majestic academic buildings and a deans bungalow.

RANK 4- Malaviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur

  1. Quality of Student Intake The quality of student intake at Malaviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur or commonly referred to as MNIT is great. A great mix of creative and talented students take admission into this esteemed college.
  2. Faculty- The faculty at MNIT,Jaipur is experienced and have a lot of practical knowledge to share if that is what you are interested in. Be prepared to be drilled if you by the faculty if you get admission into the college.
  3. Location- The college is located in Malaiya Nagar, which is a centrally located place in Jaipur with near  proximity stones from malls, shopping complex’s and the airport.
  4. Examination to be given for Admission–  JEE Mains (Paper 2)

RANK 5- National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli

  1. Quality of Student Intake  The student intake in through JEE  paper 2  with . As of 2016 the opening and closing ranks (OS) were from 771 to 1278. Quality of student intake is good  as the cutoff for getting into the institute is very high.
  2. Faculty- The faculty at   NIT, Tiruchirappalli  is full of experience . A lot of visiting faculty is also called in from other colleges and institutions .
  3. Location- The college is located in the state of  Tamil Nadu, on the banks of river Cauvery.
  4. Examination to be given for Admission–  JEE Mains (Paper 2)
  5. Infrastructure- The Department of Architecture in National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli was started in the academic year 1980-81 .The facilities available in the Department of Architecture include Computer Laboratory, Department Library, Materials Library, Model Making Workshop, Construction Yard and Building Science Laboratory.

RANK 6- Chandigarh College of Architcture (CCA)

RANK 7- Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur

  1. Quality of Student Intake– IIT, Kharagpur grants admissions after the candidate clears AAT. As the selection process for getting into an IIT is difficult only the bright minds get in though most have a preconception of becoming an Engineer but settle for Architecture.
  2. Faculty- The faculty at IIT, Kharagpur are experienced considering it’s reputation.
  3. Location- IIT Kharagpur is located 120 kilometres west of Kolkata. The campus is located five kilometers away from Kharagpur’s railway station. The layout of the present campus and the design of the buildings were carried out by a group of engineers and architects under the guidance of Werner M. Moser, a Swiss architect.

  1. Quality of Student Intake  IIT, Roorkee similar to it’s counterpart grants admissions after the candidate clears AAT. After clearing JEE Advance and AAT students get into the college.Quality of students intake is quite high.
  2. Faculty- The Architecture Course was started at the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee in the year 1956-57.The Department has the singular distinction of being the first in INDIA in instituting a Masters degree course in Architecture (M. Arch.)

  2. Faculty- The Architecture program was started in the Year 2001-2002. The college has a full fledged faculties of Architecture and Ekistics.
  3. Location- The college is located in the national capital New Delhi. The location is an advantage considering the architectural richness of the city and availability of lot of experienced guest facilities.
  4. Examination to be given for Admission– Individual Entrance Exam
  5. Infrastructure- The infrastructure of the college includes construction yard, faculty library, computer lab,etc
