Tips of Getting through an Architectural College

While most of us only focus on getting into a good architectural college, a minuscule percentage of us ever wonder what are the things which can be done to enjoy and be successful at an architectural college at the same time. The following are some of the tips which can be kept in mind to achieve a successful and a genuinely enjoyable college life.

Creating a relationship with Seniors

It is a good idea maintaining healthy relationships with seniors. Though many people might disagree with this concept, the reality is that there is a lot you can learn from their experiences and skills. It also leads to good networking as eventually all your seniors will work and compete in the same market. However,  a point to be kept in mind is that it is not that you won’t learn if don’t help your seniors but it will only add to your skill set and knowledge.

Managing your Health

This is something which most architectural students ignore, leading to a loss in their health. Eating unhealthy, irregular, lack of exercise, lack of sleep and so on and henceforth are just some of causes which lead to the deterioration of one’s health. Thus, exercise regularly, eat healthily and set a minimum number of hours which you will sleep to bypass this near fatal flaw of college life.

Being Regular with Studies

Architecture is a creative profession. That being said, it is imperative to understand that meeting deadline is necessary if one wants a good CGPA/grade. Being regular will automatically catapult you way ahead of the other students as most architectural students do not have a habit of submitting projects according to deadlines.

Attending Trade Shows and Exhibitions

As an architectural student, it is imperative to know of all the new materials and building technologies in the market. A great way of doing this is to attend trade shows and exhibitions. This is one of the smartest ways of being ahead of the herd and also a great way to network and build a supplier list for your future architectural firm.

Participating in architectural competitions at the student level is an integral part of making your designs innovative and taking them to the next level.  Examples of popular architectural contests at the student level are NASA, transparence and so on and henceforth. Attending these competitions allows you to evaluate yourself as a designer in comparison to students from different colleges and places in general and also helps you create a contact base which will help you in the years to come.

Attaining Extra Knowledge

Going out of the way to attain additional knowledge in the field is something you need to do if you want to be a great architect. Studying as per the course requirements will only get you that far. It is a widely acceptable fact that only a third of the knowledge which is required in the field is taught in college. Thus, you need to up the ante if you need to compete with the large firms.

Creating a Time Table

Management of time is extremely crucial if you want to make most of your college life. After all, architecture is one of the longest courses out there. Five years is a lot of time which can either be used to make or break your future career as an architect. A timetable ensures that your time is well-managed and that you achieve the most as well as you enjoy. Following up such regiments is crucial, thus, only design a timetable which you can follow up with action.

Maintaining Good Relations with Professors

Creating and garnering good relations with your professors will help you in increasing your skill set, will assist in getting an internship, will enhance your experience and last but not the least will lead to better grades. Besides that professors, if they like you will many a time go out of their way to inculcate a sensibility for the profession in you and might even make you their protege.

Extra Curricular

One of the great things about studying architecture is that you can immerse yourself in a host of extracurricular or related fields. The course allows you time enough to learn, explore and to reinvent yourself. Thus, whether you want to learn horse riding or shoot a short film, you can choose to do whatever you want to with architecture.

Thus, these are just some of the tips which can be kept in mind if you want to achieve a successful, enjoyable and a memorable college experience.
