Volleyball Setter Training. Important Skills that Must be Trained. Setter training is important. An extremely athletic setter can get away with not focusing a lot on technique. However, most setters will need instruction. And if you want to be successful setting at a high level, you will need a lot of training.
To begin learning how to set the ball, you should position your feet so that they are shoulder width apart. Not too wide and not too close, but comfortably apart with knees bent slightly. For right handers - in this position slide your right foot a couple of inches forward so that it's slightly in front of your left foot.

The set is ideally the second touch after the ball crosses the net. The first is the pass (sometimes called a bump) and the third will hopefully be a hit (or spike). Sometimes casual fans think that setting is the same thing as volleying and everyone on the team can do that. The setter is actually like the quarterback of the volleyball team and it’s really a specialized skill to be able to run the offense.
The setter is a critical positionin volleyball. What the Setter Does. Before the serve, make sure that all of your teammates are lined up correctly and there is no overlap. Communicate with each hitter to make sure they know the play they will run and what set they will hit.
