During one practice, I started to teach them one by one the different positions and what each one did on the field. I placed cones at each position and took the players on a walk-through from goalkeeper to center forward. Yes, the kids were all 8-years old but I got their attention. We played what I now know to be a form of “shadow play”.

Keep your best players in the "Center" positions (Center Fullback, Stopper, Center Midfield, Center Forward ). The team that controls the Center usually wins. Let your opponent have the "wings" (sidelines), in fact, encourage it.

Usually kids that are defenders are assigned that position because they are big and not as fast as other players.

Position one goalkeeper in each goal. If there are extra goalkeepers, have them rotate in every six repetitions. Have the players form a line to the side of each goal. The lines should be diagonal from each other. Divide the soccer balls evenly among the two lines. The first player in one of the lines starts with a ball at their feet.
