Look for 54″ or 60″ size boards with 3/8″ thick glass and 72″ boards with 1/2″ glass for gym-correct rebound. 3/8″ glass on a 54″ or 60″ backboard provides the same rebound as a regulation 72″ backboard made of 1/2″ glass but has the advantage of being lighter making it easier to adjust the rim height for your little ones.
Regulation basketball backboards have a width of 72” | 183 cm and a height of 42” | 110 cm with an inner rectangle that is 24” | 61 cm wide and 18” | 45.7 cm tall. For casual non-regulation courts, smaller Fan-Shaped Backboards are often used. Basketball rims are hung 10’ | 3.05 m above the court floor. Fan-Shaped Backboard

For small children, consider a Junior 36″ basketball backboard. This “half-size” backboard provides the same consistent ball response and durability as its big brothers, the 72” and 60”, but it is sized to fit the needs of a family with young players just learning the game. Junior systems are adjustable, but from three to five feet only.
Rims at every level of play are 18 inches in diameter. Backboards are also the same size at each of these levels. A regulation backboard measures 6 feet wide and 42 inches (3.5 feet) tall.
They are 72 inches wide, 42 inches high, half an inch thick and of course are made of glass. If you are looking for a home basketball gym or for a church or school then this will be the size you will want to go with. Most of you, however, are looking for drive way or backyard portable basketball goals. There is no need to have a 72 inch backboard.
